Overview of Gas Spring
A gas spring (or gas strut) is a compact, self-contained pneumatic device consisting of a cylinder, piston, and rod, charged with pressurized nitrogen gas to provide lift, counterbalance, or damping forces. Used extensively for lifting heavy lids, ergonomic furniture, and automotive applications, they offer controlled, reliable movement.

Low Maintenance
Unlike other types of springs, gas springs require little or no maintenance. They still consist of multiple parts. Gas springs have a piston, seals and attachments. However, these parts are enclosed in a cylinder, so maintaining gas springs is a breeze.
Long-Lasting
Gas springs are long-lasting. They typically last longer than other types of springs, in fact. Other types of springs use a purely mechanical method of operation. They consist of a coiled piece of metal, which is used to create extension springs or compression springs.
Locking
While not available in gas springs, many of them can be locked in place. There are non-locking gas springs, and there are locking gas springs. Locking gas springs can be "locked" in place. Non-locking gas springs, on the other hand, don't offer this option.
Ergonomics
Another benefit of gas springs is ergonomics. They are more ergonomic than traditional springs. They produce a smooth action when exposed to a compressive force. The piston of a gas spring will simply retract into the cylinder.

Common types
Dynamic gas springs
Dynamic gas springs use a cylinder slot to control speed and damping across the stroke. Ideal where the motion profile must be tuned precisely, for example, in automotive tailgates and industrial closures.
Compression gas springs
Compression gas springs are the most common type. The rod extends automatically when force is removed. This type of spring is used in lids, hatches, equipment enclosures, and ergonomic mechanisms.
Lockable gas springs
Lockable variants contain a special internal valve that allows the rod to lock at any point. These gas springs are essential in adjustable furniture, medical devices, and ergonomic systems.
Stainless steel gas springs
Manufactured from corrosion-resistant stainless steel, these components are designed for marine, medical, food-processing, and hygiene-critical environments.
Traction gas springs
Traction gas springs operate in tension, retracting automatically. They are suitable for folding ramps, retractable systems, and applications requiring inward force.
Automotive Manufacturing
Gas springs are commonly used in automotive manufacturing for tasks like lifting hoods and trunks, adjusting seats, and supporting tailgates and hatches.
Aerospace Industry
In the aerospace industry, gas springs play a vital role in tasks such as securing cabin doors, controlling aircraft components, and facilitating cargo loading and unloading.
Furniture and Ergonomics
Gas springs are a staple in ergonomic office chairs, providing adjustable seat height and comfortable reclining. They also find use in adjustable-height desks and cabinet doors.
Medical Equipment
Gas springs are employed in medical equipment like hospital beds, patient lifters, and examination tables, where precise positioning and smooth operation are essential.

Structure
Rod
A durable, cylindrical element, commonly crafted from metals like stainless steel or steel, which extends from the cylinder. The rod is pivotal, facilitating the piston's movement within the cylinder.
01
Piston
Housed within the cylinder, the piston, often fabricated from robust stainless steel, traverses the cylinder's length. The piston has a small orifice that provides for smoothly controlled extension of the spring.
02
Cylinder
This hollow metal tube, crafted from steel or stainless steel, encapsulates the gas and piston. Its threaded end facilitates secure mounting.
03
Oil
Integrated for enhanced performance, this lubricant counters potential piston adherence, fortifying the seal and preventing potential leaks.
04
Seal Pack Assembly
Positioned at the cylinder's end, this assembly combines multiple seals, ensuring gas containment and consistent oil retention.
05
Installation Precautions
Observe Design Limits: Use gas springs only within their rated load capacities, temperature ranges, and environmental tolerances.
Regular Inspection: While gas springs require little maintenance, periodic inspection for signs of wear, leaks, or damage is recommended. Catching issues early helps prevent unexpected failures.
Correct Installation: Follow manufacturer guidelines for mounting orientation, alignment, and torque on fittings. Incorrect installation can reduce lifespan or cause malfunction.
Avoid Unauthorized Modifications: Never attempt to open, refill, or modify a gas spring unless explicitly designed for adjustment.
Safe Disposal: When a gas spring reaches end-of-life, safely release internal pressure and recycle according to local regulations. Specialized recycling may be required for some industrial gas springs.
