Overview
Purpose built for marine engine bays, these units-commonly called gas springs, gas struts, lift supports, gas shocks, gas props, or motion dampers-balance heavy hatch lids and prevent slam on descent. Land engineers each assembly to provide stable lift, predictable damping, and long service life in high humidity and temperature swing conditions below deck.
Compatible Gas Spring Types for Marine Engine Hatches
To match different hatch sizes, materials, and service conditions, the following gas spring families are recommended for engine compartment applications:
- Stainless Steel 316 Marine Gas Struts
Corrosion-resistant SS316 cylinder and rod for saltwater exposure and frequent wash-down. Extended length 14–36 inch, force 400–1200 N. Ideal for engine bays, aft deck lids, and wet lockers.
- Heavy-Duty Compression Gas Springs
Reinforced tubes and Ø10–Ø12 mm rods for large, insulated fiberglass or composite hatches. Extended length 18–36 inch, force 700–1200 N. Optional high-temperature oil for engine-room heat.
- Adjustable-Force Gas Springs
Factory-charged units that can be bled down during installation to fine-tune lift and hold. Useful when hatch weight varies due to sound-proofing or added hardware. Typical range 600–1000 N.
- Soft-Close Damped Gas Struts
Enhanced oil damping for controlled last-inch descent to protect latches and seals. Common lengths 14–28 inch, force 400–900 N. Recommended for hatches used by crew and guests.
- Inter-Stop / Position-Hold Gas Springs
Valving tuned to pause at intermediate angles for maintenance checks. Length 16–30 inch, force 500–900 N. Use where partial-open service is common.
- Rigid-Locking Gas Springs (Mechanical Lock)
Lock in the extended position for added safety during prolonged service. Specify with metal end fittings and positive release. Length 18–32 inch, force 600–1000 N. Use in addition to, not as a substitute for, mechanical safety props where required.
- Black Nitrided Rod Gas Springs
QPQ-treated rod for corrosion resistance with reduced glare on deck. Length 14–36 inch, force 400–1000 N. Good for open-cockpit installations.
- End Fittings & Hardware
10–13 mm ball sockets, metal eyelets, angled brackets, and quick-release ends are available. For high loads choose all-metal joints; for stainless assemblies specify SS316 hardware throughout.
- Not typically recommended: tension (pull-type) gas springs for engine hatches, as they do not provide upward lift; use compression types as listed above.
Key Features
Marine durability: SS316 housings and rods available for saltwater environments; all-metal end fittings for high loads.
Controlled motion: nitrogen charging with oil damping for soft open and soft close on large, insulated lids.
Wide fit range: extended lengths 14–36 inch with typical strokes 100–300 mm to suit single or twin hatch layouts.
High force options: factory set 400–1200 N approx 90–270 lb; adjustable force versions available for final balance.
Long service life: precision honed tubes, hardened rods, and low leakage seal packs; cycle life ≥ 40,000.
Quiet operation: low friction guidance minimizes chatter and resonance in enclosed cabins.
Easy installation: ball sockets or eyelets for 10–13 mm studs with positive clip retention.
All weather: reliable from −30 °C to +80 °C; specialty oils available for tropical or cold climates.
Compliance: RoHS and REACH compatible oils and finishes.

Orientation: install rod end down in the closed position to keep seals lubricated
How to Choose
Measure length: with the hatch fully open, measure center to center between mounts; select an extended length close to that value.
Select force per unit:
Light composite hatch: 400–600 N
Standard fiberglass hatch with sound insulation: 700–900 N
Large or glass reinforced hatch with hardware: 1000–1200 N
For wide or heavy lids, use two supports to prevent racking and reduce hinge load.
Environment: specify SS316 for direct salt exposure or frequent washdown; choose black nitrided rods if glare reduction is required.
Hardware match: verify stud size and end fitting type before ordering; consider locking or adjustable force versions for service safety.
Installation Guide
Support the hatch securely before removal or installation.
Lift the retaining clip slightly, press the socket onto the stud, then reseat the clip.
Cycle open and close to confirm full travel, hinge clearance, and damping quality.
For adjustable force units, bleed pressure in small steps until the hatch rises smoothly and stays open without drift.
Marine Boat Scenarios
Engine compartment hatches: steady hold open for maintenance in rolling conditions.
Generator and systems bays: controlled access for service technicians in tight spaces.
Aft deck service lids and mezzanine hatches: cushioned motion to protect latches and seals.
Battery and systems lockers: safe one hand operation during inspection.
